Data scientist, Air quality/Energy (Remote)

The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) is looking for a fully remote Data Scientist with experience in air quality and/or the energy sector to support and enhance our research capabilities. In this role, you will develop new impactful data products and tools, ensure existing data systems run smoothly, and conduct timely data analyses in response to pollution episodes and policy-relevant events.

The role
As part of the data team, you will be responsible for ensuring that our analysts' data needs are met, with the main thematic areas being air quality and the energy sector. As a data and research-driven organisation, the integrity of data and methods is central to our work. Together with the analyst and the team, you will ensure the data and methods used are adequate to the questions being asked.

Main responsibilities
  • Identify, collect, and process data to enable studies on specific research questions.
  • Support research efforts by advising on and conducting data analyses.
  • Expand research capabilities by developing new data products and by implementing and validating new modelling approaches.
  • Maintain and further develop existing data & modelling pipelines for air quality, emission, and energy data products (e.g. deweathering AQ data, EU CO2 emission tracker).
  • As part of the data team, participate in developing the team's practices, particularly in quality control and data validation efforts.
  • Depending on the interests, data visualisation and dashboard design can also be part of the role.

Requirements
  • Demonstrable experience in data science/data analysis.
  • Good knowledge of Python or R.
  • Basic command of git/other version control.
  • Higher education in natural sciences, data science, engineering, or similar.
  • Knowledge of basic machine learning and statistical modelling methods.
  • Knowledge of at least one: air quality, energy sector, and willingness to expand the knowledge domain.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with both technical and non-technical colleagues and collaborators.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Nice to have skills:
  • Postgres/SQL
  • Geospatial datasets/GIS
  • Google Cloud Platform or other cloud service (e.g. AWS, Azure)
