Job title: Industry Analyst, Indonesia (Full time, Remote)
Indonesia, the largest growing economy in Southeast Asia and the fourth largest population in the world, is heavily reliant on coal for the national power generation. Notable growth comes from captive coal power in the past decade, powering the Government’s downstreaming policy initiatives, particularly nickel. While there are high level commitments on climate and energy transition, namely NDC, NZE by 2060, JETP - on-grid cap & off-grid forthcoming, current climate targets are riddled with inconsistencies due to weak regulatory framework and governance, failing to place environmental and health aspects first.
Air pollution has become more and more prevalent as a national issue, especially in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta where over 10 million citizens reside, and also in less known regions where heavy industries have expanded rapidly, creating new hotspots in the country. Often overlooked, air pollution causes serious health effects and imposes significant economic burden. Air pollution, energy, and climate change are deeply intertwined. For this, clean air can be the secret weapon to tackle the crisis as the globe enters the defining decade where collective actions will determine our future. This makes Indonesia—the largest growing economy in Southeast Asia—a strong focus, as the nation threads its path to meet climate commitments and secure economic growth.
CREA’s work in Indonesia focuses on engaging with policymakers and local partner organizations through evidence and data, to advance efforts in air quality, energy and emissions in the country. Our team works with advocates, academics, and allies to identify the root causes, to highlight solutions and the necessary reforms, and to build awareness of the issue. CREA is hiring for a full-time remote Industry Analyst to join CREA’s Indonesia team to support this effort.
About the Team
You will join the Indonesia team, a small team that is currently made up of one analyst and one researcher who monitor developments in air quality and energy topics, assess trends and impacts, and develop briefings and reports to inform policymakers and the public with these insights.
The team works with partners—civil society organizations, lawyers, and political and business decision-makers—who are advocating or legislating for the protection of environmental and public health. For example, recently we have been quantifying the health impacts of coal-fired power plants in Indonesia (e.g. JETP, Banten-Suralaya, nickel industry in Sulawesi and Maluku), to provide evidence that will mobilize actions and support the fight for the phase-out of coal-based power generation. Our research into air pollution may also include a variety of different emissions sources and sectors, including fossil fuel production and consumption (coal, oil, gas), energy-intensive industries (metals, cement), transportation, and agriculture.
About the Position
We are recruiting for an Industry Analyst who will conduct research, analysis, and reporting on Indonesia’s current initiatives, national commitments, and policy decisions that will enable and accelerate transition to low-emissions and low-carbon industries. The Industry Analyst will focus on revealing trends on processing technology, power supply planning for Indonesia’s metals industry – nickel, aluminium, iron and steel, as well as other industrial subsectors and key industrial parks. This role reports to the lead of the Indonesia program.
Tasks and responsibilities include;
Familiarity of Indonesia’s industrial sector in the angle of energy and emissions, through past experiences and involvements, as well as through review of official government publications, online sources, and professional networks
Keeping track of industry-specific developments and their implications on air quality, energy and emissions trends and policies in Indonesia, and ability to assess how the country dynamics influence progress and decisions
Conduct in-depth analysis and distill insights on all energy- and emissions-related topics, which would include review of national emissions standards, research on power generation and industrial emissions, air pollution control technologies, and health and economic impacts of air pollution
Work with small to big datasets related to the topics mentioned above—ranging from temporal air quality data, point source emissions standards and monitoring, database of industrial capacities and activity data, database of power plants linked to these industrial activities, year-to-year energy consumption data for different fuel types, etc.
Develop sharp analysis to be published in form of reports, briefings, articles, or presentation materials to inform policymakers, stakeholders, and the public about Indonesia’s industrial trends and insights
Communicate research findings effectively
Collaborate with team members, and provide support on project implementation and output delivery
